When the idea for this post arrived, daylight saving time had just begun. And then there were the winds of change. Areas of focus between January and now have shifted more times than I’d like to admit. No more babying our plants as we find the best places in the yard for optimal growth and harvest.
Sometimes you just have to jump back in it. We can sit on the couch and think about all the tweaks that need to happen, or we can jump in with the flow of what’s happening and take more considerable action! Some things can be done “out of order.”
On January 14, 2023, I started my first raised bed. I was itching to start a garden in a real yard, having recently come from a small balcony area of growing space in Colorado. Also, the soil was clay and had in-ground sprinklers that I didn’t want to disturb. So – raised beds. This was a lesson in passion, and also patience to completion.
Sometimes gardening in North Texas can be, well, adventurous! Here is the snapshot story of my first time growing collard greens in the fall. Planting, consuming, dehydrating, and leftovers!
I bought these rescued Shastas off of the clearance rack at Walmart in summer, 2022. Being early August, I imagine they thought it was too hot and too late to do anything with these. You also know Walmart had to get that fall stock in! Seriously, these Daisies looked fine to me.
Come on home plant babies!
I created a new greenhouse out of mostly reclaimed materials! The still small voice and his hand of provision were with me all the way.
What voices are guiding us? In the pursuit of a sweet potato harvest, I reflect on all the available advice and the voices we can follow.
Mulch can be like a good friendship.
Mulch – is protection for roots and plants.
God provides spiritual protection, and friends protect each other as we grow in life.
Basil is easy enough to grow. But I did everything wrong this year that you could possibly do to basil:
Constantly wet the leaves when watering.
Watered frequently in the evening.
Didn’t pinch it back. At all.
Didn’t manage the pests.
Plus, it was HOT.
Sometimes, you have to get in the garden and clean it up a little . . .
Remember in my tomato post, I mentioned that beginners should consult more experienced gardeners? Well, I’ve never grown okra before. I don’t even like okra. I did not consult my DuckDuckGo friends or my Facebook gardening groups. I ignored the instructions on the seed packet. I just planted a bunch of okra seeds together to see what would happen.
